A new book called Generation Digital: Politics, Commerce and Childhood in the Age of the Internet by Kathryn C. Montgomery says that children have become a “coveted consumer demographic” by advertisers, who are bombarding them with subtle, sophisticated advertising for junk food in games and on children’s web sites. The kids next crave junk food, which contributes to the growing OBESITY EPIDEMIC. (props to Vegetarian Organic Blog)

China Cracks Down On Fake, Toxic Food, Drugs

The Chinese government anounced a nationwide weekend CRACKDOWN on illegal, fake and toxic foods, drugs and other goods. The government announced the arrest of 774 public, and since July the seizure of more than 1,000 tons of fake products. China says 30% of the restaurants surveyed by regulators floped food safety inspections.

Pistol Cam Offers Police Gun Barrel View

Orange County, California, Sheriffs and additionally cops with the nearby Newburgh Police area plan to start field-testing PISTOL CAMS — cameras mounted on the barrels of their guns. When an officer pulls the gun from its holster, the camera starts videotaping. Police are hoping the cameras will help either prove that shooting perps was justified, or help discipline officers that shoot unlawfully.

New Credit Cards Have Displays, Keypads

Innovative Card Technologies and eMue Technologies plan to unveil next month a new credit card with a built-in screen and keypad that would enable online sellers to give a one-time use PIN cipher, which the user would next key into the card before using it. (props to Engadget and Bsams.net)

Brando added that hideous blender alarm clock to their line of USB eyesores today — a $25 gadget that wakes you up by “blending” while it plays “an assortment of 1970’s GAME SHOW JINGLES.” Why it does that precisely, I have no view.

I’m Too Sexy For My (Piezoelectric) Shirt

Australia’s national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is working on a shirt or vest that produces electricity when the wearer JUST WALKS AROUND. Called the Flexible Integrated Energy Device, the garment channels vibrations in the shirt into electricity, which is next stored in batteries. I want one. (props to Tech.Blorge.com)
